Live | D-A-D & The 69 Eyes – Turbinenhalle 2 – Oberhausen [Ger]

6 November 2025

Disneyland After Dark and The 69 Eyes were guests at the Turbinenhalle Oberhausen on November 6. A friend told me about this show and I thought, why not? Let’s just go and see what happens. Of course, I had known the names for a long time, but until now I had never had the opportunity to see a live show by these both Scandinavian bands. Despite the fact that both have been around for quite a few years.

THE 69 EYES

It was immediately clear that this was a double headline show, kicking off with the Finns from The 69 Eyes. The sound was great and the venue was packed, even though it was a Thursday night. I heard from other attendees that tonight’s setlist had been mixed up quite a bit, which certainly makes it more interesting for fans who go to more shows from this package.

Singer Jyrki 69 [Jyrki Pekka Emil Linnankivi] and his band kick things off with ,,Devils” and ,,Feel Berlin”. This opening immediately makes it clear that they are ready to rock. Drummer Jussi 69 [Jussi Heikki Tapio Vuori] is a musician after my own heart. A tremendous force of nature behind his drum kit, playing his parts with precision. When you also have a bassist like Archzie [Arto Väinö Ensio Ojajärvi], who conjures up an incredible bass sound, you have a rhythm section that many bands would envy.

It is clear to see, and above all to hear, that The 69 Eyes have been around for quite a few years. They are definitely a band that can captivate you for an evening with their mix of gothic / sleaze / hard rock with a touch of glam. ‘Don’t be difficult and just play’ is the motto of these guys. And that makes for very high entertainment value. Although I must admit that, Jyrki 69’s vocals become a bit monotonous after an hour and a half. His interaction with the audience is also rather limited, which I find a pity. Other than that, a super cool performance and definitely a band I will go see again.

D-A-D

And then, after a break that took forever, over 45 minutes, it’s time for D-A-D. The sound is a bit shaky, especially at the beginning of the set. But overall, the sound remained somewhat distorted. And I got the impression that these guys themselves had also been partying. The fans won’t care much, although some of the early fans decided to go home a little disappointed early on in the set.

Musically it was all quite well put together, but the musicians, and especially bassist Stig Pedersen, were a little too preoccupied with showing off and posing. It was almost like a circus act. I can enjoy that for a while, but after a few songs I’ve had enough. It’s great that the man owns several 2-string bass guitars, but it’s really about the playing and not the clowning around.

In any case, the fans celebrated songs like ,,Jihad”, ,,Rim Of Hell”, and the D-A-D classic hit ,,Sleeping My Day Away”.

THE CONCLUSION

I came to the conclusion that this was not a D-A-D performance that would remain etched in my memory forever. Perhaps the band will get a chance at redemption someday. In any case, I was able to go home feeling satisfied, because The 69 Eyes gig alone was worth the trip to Oberhausen.
