Review | Equilibrium – Equinox
Nuclear Blast Records
Equilibrium, what a great name for a band, by the way, is a German metal band and ‘Equinox’ is their seventh album. After a six-year hiatus ‘Equinox’ is again an album that mixes a lot of musical genres and influences, like melodic death metal with folk elements and electronics; resulting in a sound that reminds me of Finntroll or Wolfchant.
NEW SINGER
Equilibrium’s new album features new singer Fabian Getto, who joined the band in 2023, and his throat almost fits perfectly. ,,Earth Tongue” opens this album with its blasting metal sound, blending melody and atmosphere. It also features a melodic, dense chorus, and even electronics. ,,Gnosis” is a straightforward, not very original melodic death metal track, while ,,Nexus” is heavy pounding, extremely aggressive with screaming vocals and almost In Flames-like characteristics.
,,Anderswelt” is the only track with a German title – but no German lyrics – and it displays again the growling vocals of Getto, which do not really set my soul on fire, as I prefer clean vocals!
GUEST SINGER
,,Borrowed Waters” featuring guest singer Roniit, is the only calm track of the album and it has a lot of atmosphere. The vocals of Roniit are very emotional and heartfelt. Furthermore this song shows the more progressive and symphonic side of Equilibrium and that is a side I kind of like more than the death metal side…
EQUILIBRIUM – THE CONCLUSION
Overall, ‘Equinox’ is not my kind of album, but for fans of melodic death metal you should give it a try. Needless to say that you have to play it LOUD.
