Heavy Hangover | Soulfly Pale Ale

The taste of a thousand sunrises

Spring has arrived in full force, painting the world in golden hues and drenching every day in sunlight that seems to hum with energy. The yellow of our sun piercing through the sky, lighting up the green of our grass. Summer abounds! It’s the kind of weather that begs for crisp, refreshing beers. Moving away from the dark tar Stouts and heavy hitting Porters, into the subtle refreshing I.P.A.’s, blondes and pale ales. One that sings as brightly as the sun overhead. And as the rays warm your skin, you can almost feel the pulse of Brazil radiating through, a groove-laden heartbeat that echoes the tribal rhythms and relentless spirit of Soulfly.

MAX CAVALERA

At the heart of this vibrant story stands Max Cavalera, the legend whose name is etched into the annals of death metal history. From the relentless raw, primal power Sepultura, the band he famously founded with his brother Igor, to the bold new chapter that was Soulfly, Max has always been a pioneer. He’s a master at blending cultures, sounds, and stories, infusing every riff and roar with the heat and tribal pulse ‘n grooves of his homeland, and the unyielding drive of a true music innovator.

Now, imagine channelling that same energy into a beer, creating a crispy fresh brew that captures the sun-soaked spirit of spring and the electrifying vibe of Soulfly’s powerful music. The Mage-Malte edition of Soulfly Pale Ale isn’t just a drink; it’s an experience. It’s the taste of a thousand sunrises, the soundtrack to millions of neck-crushing headbangers, and a tribute to the relentless creativity that defines both the band and the brewer. It is the festival ground set ablaze with bouncing masses raising their fists and beers to celebrate passion and musical companionship.

This is more than just a review. This is a celebration. It’s a story of sunshine, sound, and the soul of a beer that unites metalheads, musicians, and brewers in a toast to legends, both onstage and in the glass. So, raise your pint, crank the volume, and let the sun and sound of Soulfly carry you into a sunny hot state of mind that will echo long after the last note fades.

BRASSERIE MAGE-MALTE – SOULFLY PALE ALE

Belgian-Blonde Style Pale Ale

5.5% ABV

The presentation is simple but effective. The green and yellow mixed into the label with a lion’s head giving you a death stare. His red lit eyes bring a spookier appeal forward, added to the shadowy luster of the head and background. The logo of the band at the bottom, open and transparent. Wonderful. Sideways the label transcribes the information for the brewery and the ingredients list as well as the IBU (21) and ABV (5.5%). Everything in Iron Maiden logo font. The other side features the band’s tribal logo and some additional info + barcode.

Pouring the Mage-Malte Soulfly Pale Ale into the glass, you’re greeted by a lively, slightly hazy golden hue, crowned with a frothy white head that lingers just long enough to set the stage. The beer’s appearance is inviting, reminiscent of a summer festival crowd: energetic, unfiltered, and ready to burst with character. The gentle carbonation dances up the sides, promising refreshment and a bit of searing wildness. Much like a Soulfly pit in full swing it tickles the senses.

THE SCENT OF SUMMER

Bringing the glass closer, the nose is immediately struck by a harmonious blend of floral and citrus hops, underscored by a biscuity malt backbone. It is fresh and inviting. There’s a subtle tickling sweetness, with light caramel and acacia honey coming to mind, woven with orange zest. It ebbs into a faint herbal note that is equally interesting. It’s not a hop bomb, but rather a balanced bouquet that hints at tradition and a touch of rebellion, much like the genre-bending loud riffs of Soulfly themselves.

TASTE OF BRAZILIAN BEACHES

First sip: a crisp, refreshing attack, with a mellow bitterness that never overpowers. The malt profile is smooth and biscuity, providing a sturdy broad stage for the hops to shine. Citrus notes, a hint of pleasant orange, some light tangerine, and a hint of lime, melt with delicate floral accents and a whisper of pleasant (light) peppery spice. As the beer warms, a gentle toffee sweetness emerges with towering precision, landing deep in your mind. Balancing the bitterness and giving the ale a rounded, sessionable feel, it all rocks as the glass waltzes. The finish is clean, slightly dry, and leaves an enduring echo of malt and citrus, inviting another sip.

EXPERIENCE THE TASTING

With Soulfly’s iconic debut album blaring in the background, the experience transcends mere drinking. ,,Eye for an Eye” roars from my speakers with the sun blazing the atmosphere. The Pale Ale’s energetic fizz and balanced flavors sync with the tribal grooves and fierce riffs, amplifying both the music and the beer. There’s a synergy here: the beer’s approachable bitterness and subtle complexity mirror the band’s blend of aggression and tribal melody. Each sip feels like a breakdown with unexpected twists, invigorating tastes, and deeply satisfying outcome. It’s the kind of beer you want in your hand as you headbang through the song and the genre-defining classic ,,Bleed”, letting the flavors and music collide in a sensory mosh pit.

FOOD PAIRING GALORE

Pair this Soulfly Pale Ale with spicy grilled chicken wings, a platter of oriental spiced ribs, or a loaded barbecue style pizza. The beer’s crispness and citrus notes cut through the heat and greasy richness, while its malt backbone complements charred flavors and savory toppings. For a true headbanger’s feast, try it alongside a smoky barbecue pulled pork sandwich. The interplay of malt, hops, and spice will keep your palate moshing for more, and will balance the sunny vibes the band’s scorching riffs.

SOULFLY PALE ALE – FINAL NOTES

Mage-Malte’s Soulfly Pale Ale is a balanced, soulful brew that’s as versatile as the band it’s named after. It’s not about extremes, but about the harmony of malt and hops. It’s about the tradition and innovation, of taste and experience, musically and tastefully. Crank up the volume, pour yourself a glass, and let the flavors ride the groove of Soulfly’s blend of tribal grooves and relentless thrash.

“It all depends on the roots, bloody roots.”
