Review | Paradise Lost – Ascension
Nuclear Blast Records
First of all, I have to admit that I have lost track of this iconic gothic metal band since their fantastic album ‘Icon’, which was released way back in 1993. It is still the only Paradise Lost album I have in my huge record collection till this day. But now I had the chance to review their new album called ‘Ascension’ and after a couple of spins I was almost addicted to Paradise Lost 17th studio album.
A FIVE-YEAR HIATUS
After a five-year hiatus, the kings of metal’s dark side return with a mind-blowing album, featuring ten brand new tracks which cover the myriads of sounds in the Yorkshire quintet’s arsenal. So, from the all-out heavy metal to sky-high melody with lots of melancholy and atmosphere. Opening track ,,Serpent On The Cross” sets the tone for this remarkable album with its impressive doomy riff, evolving into a classic metal track that stands the test of time for sure. The album’s first single ,,Silence Like The Grave” is an up-tempo song with an infectious drive, glorious guitar melodies and a sledgehammer chorus that stays in your head for days…. a 100% gothic metal gem indeed!
REMARKABLE SONGS
,,Diluvium”, one of my personal favs of this record, offers classic heavy metal structures and even reminds me of Black Sabbath at certain times as it is packed with tempo changes galore, excellent guitar work by Gregor Mackintosh and those glorious vocals of Nick Holmes. ,,Deceivers” is another metallic up-tempo track featuring again formidable guitar melodies, while ,,Lay A Wreath Upon The World”, kicking of with acoustic guitars, stands out due to the huge, sorrowful musical climax.
,,The Precipice” is another remarkable song displaying an intense genuine atmosphere with beautiful piano lines and a wonderful interplay between dark and light and hope and despair; especially Holmes’s vocals here are second to none.
PARADISE LOST – THE CONCLUSION
‘Ascension’ is a 100% pure Paradise Lost album, an awesome, doomy, and gothic record, a must for all lovers of this genre, one of their best records for sure and I am addicted to it!!
Nick Holmes: “Ironically, miserable music is always the most enjoyable to listen to, and to write I guess?’’ I could not agree more…. Play it LOUD!!
