Review | FlowerLeaf – Dreamerie
Independent release
FlowerLeaf is a modern symphonic metal band originally from Brazil, now based in Germany. Their debut album ‘Stronger’ (2018) featured guest appearances by Marina La Torraca (Battle Beast) and Mylena Monaco (Sinaya). Now 8 years later it is time to reveal their new effort ‘Dreamerie’.
‘Dreamerie’ explores the theme of dreams, both uplifting and dark. The band FlowerLeaf was formed around singer Vivs Takahashi and bassist Marcelo Kaczorowsky. The band will be touring Europe starting in March as support for Edenbridge.
MUSICALLY
Musically, the landscape can be compared to bands such as After Forever, Epica, and sometimes Nightwish. Compelling melodies, deeply tuned guitars, a roaring bass, and explosive drums. Although there is also a more power metal edge to the songs here and there, which distinguishes the band from the aforementioned acts. It is not clear to me who is responsible for the keyboard parts [or their programming].
Production-wise, Dreamerie‘ sounds great. The vocal production was handled by Marina La Torraca, and the mixing and mastering took place at Sawdust Recordings Studio in Germany.
OWN IDENTITY?
The album will be music to the ears of fans of the symphonic metal genre. What I personally find lacking is the band’s own identity. The title track ,,Dreamerie” starts with an atmosphere and sounds that could have been on the `Imaginaerum’ (Nightwish) album. At least until the guitars kick in during the verses. Guitarist Luca Schulte-Kellinghaus proves he can play excellent solos. And that goes for all the instrumentalists on this record. It is clear that they have above-average mastery of their instruments.
What I do miss, though, is that one song that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. A song that breaks things open, so to speak. The gateway to the rest of the album.
FLOWERLEAF – THE CONCLUSION
All the songs are of the same standard. That’s not a bad thing in itself, but I would love it if the songs were arranged in a more fluid way and connected to each other in a natural way. Because, on the positive side, all the songs on this album are of the same standard.
Singer Vivs is an excellent singer who holds her own and, together with her bandmates, has managed to put together a great album with ‘Dreamerie’. Fans of this type of metal should really listen to this album. Or go see them on their tour dates with Edenbridge in March and convince yourself.
