ROUTINE

By johanne James

Good day, my friends, I hope you are all well.

Routine.
We all have them. You know , that schedule you keep to on a daily basis. Day in and day out, that same monotonous and eternal treadmill, or mull, as the case may be. Some of us need routine or structure as one young person informed me. Personally I find them useful to a point, then throw it away out of the window. It’s nice to break away from the usual. How many people say “I’m so looking forward to the weekend” or “I need a break”? If I had a pound for each time I heard that, I would have been as rich as Donald Trump, or even Donald Duck. Lol.

Being on tour had its routine.
Arrive at the venue, breakfast, loading, set up, sound check, relax, dinner, play, tear down, shower, load up and off to the next venue. But as exciting and enjoyable as it is, you do need a break now and then. Playing the same compositions on a nightly basis can result in you going through the motions, therefore I always look for new ways to spice things up a little and break the cycle. Depending on your personality you’ll either take to it or run a mile, it’s not for everyone, some can enjoy the unpredictability of the day. Let’s see what it may bring, for one fortunate fellow I know doesn’t even wear a watch! Being very astute and entrepreneurial, he made himself a tidy sum by having a routine that he no longer is bound to or by? Either will do. Good for you, old friend, as he spends his days doing exactly as he pleases and is beholden to no one!

Well my friends, for those of you who have a structured day and those who don’t. I hope you all had a very merry Christmas and I wish you all the best for the new year.

Johanne James
