Guitarist Ruud Jolie has been a key member of Within Temptation’s lineup for nearly twenty-five years. The Dutch band is internationally recognized as one of the most important representatives of symphonic metal. In his book In Spotlight and Shadow – My Road Trip with Within Temptation, set to be released on September 1, he offers a unique behind-the-scenes look of life on the road.

Told with refreshing honesty, humor, and a healthy dose of self-deprecation, the book includes a foreword by Iron Maiden’s legendary bassist and founder Steve Harris, as well as a heartfelt afterword by Within Temptation frontwoman Sharon den Adel. It is richly illustrated with never-before-seen photos, including exclusive backstage shots.
With an engaging storytelling style, Jolie takes readers through the highs of international success and fame with the band, while also delving into the struggles, uncertainties, and deeply human moments of life on tour. Several of the hilarious anecdotes he shares wouldn’t feel out of place in the script of the cult classic This Is Spinal Tap.
