TIO GRINGO is a fun lovin’, country trash, cow punk band from Breda [NL]. They have just released the 7-track EP ‘This Functional Family’ and I can tell you that it is worth a listening. They are not afraid to use unusual instruments; their drummer Dimitri ‘DJ’ Jeltsema, plays a kit made of pots and tins while the rhythm guitarist, Peter Westerlaken, uses a self-built jerrycan guitar and the bass player, Joris vanden Berg, a stand-up bass, with lead guitarist Jeroen van Tongeren and singer Mo completing the line-up. All this is good fun of course but also musicwise this 5-piece has something to offer. Short catchy songs of which ,,Tiger Man’’ with a Rose Tattoo-ish slide solo and ,,Sick Note’’, a very short, super fast, humorous, mostly instrumental with a funny answering machine part [in Dutch], catch my attention. ,,Grasskiller’’, fast and rocky, is accompanied by a funny video. Also ,,Why Me’’, with the very present violin and Johnny Cash-like ,,High Maintenance’’ are no throw away songs. All in all worth to check out and be assured it will get you in a good mood.
