Review | Electric Boys – Shady Side Of Town EP
Mighty Music
For whatever reason I always followed Swedish funk rockers Electric Boys, led by guitarist/vocalist Conny Bloom and bass player Andy Christell, the only remaining original members of the starting line-up back in the late eighties (the current line-up includes drummer Jolle Atlagic plus guitarist Martin Thomander). When they recorded their latest album ‘Grand Explosivos’ in 2023 they had some left-over tracks. The main reason for not putting them on the album was the fact that the band does not like to last their albums too long, afraid of maybe losing the momentum. Well, each to their own, I guess.
MAIN PROBLEM
My main problem with Electric Boys has always been the fact that they not always managed to deliver albums that were from start to finish immaculate. There were always a few mediocre tracks there and that is maybe the reason that Electric Boys always stayed in the second division, always narrowly missing out on promotion to the top division. Mind you, on the other hand it must be said that the group never delivered a fluke either.
GOOD ENOUGH
According to the group the four songs on their EP ‘Shady Side Of Town’ were certainly good enough to be included on their latest CD and that is why two years after the release of ‘Grand Explosivos’ the tracks ,,Head Honcho’’, ,,Grand Explosivos’’, ,,Looking For Vayaya’’ (little bit of a naughty title if you ask me) and ,,Keep It Dark’’ are seeing the light of day. The four tracks sum up exactly where these boys stand for: driven funky hard rock and soul, full of flavor (,,Grand Explosivos’’ has clearly some Spanish/Mexican spirit and taste) brought with energy and the enthusiasm is just dripping of the band -members’ performance.
ELECTRIC BOYS – THE CONCLUSION
Actually, this latest release of Electric Boys may be short with just four songs and a playtime of just fifteen minutes, but from the very first until the very last second ‘Shady Side Of Town’ is entertaining, vibrant and highly entertaining. According to my information this is a release that is available as stream and/or download. Check out the track ,,Keep It Dark’’ on YouTube to find out what this release is all about. Nice work gentlemen.
