Review | John Corabi – New Day
Frontiers Music srl
Singer John Corabi has been around for years and is known for his time with The Scream, Mötley Crüe, Union and more recently The Dead Daisies. On top of that he did some other projects as well, but a solo studio-album from the 66-year old was still missing. Until now….
MARTI FREDERIKSEN
For the recording of his album John engaged producer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Marti Frederiksen plus a bunch of other seasoned players such as guitarist Richard Fortus (Guns N’ Roses), keyboardist Paul Taylor (Winger) plus Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr on guitar. As you see, no musicians of John’s current band The Dead Daisies were involved.
STYLE
Corabi has gone back to some early influences for this album that is based on late sixties and early seventies rock and contemporary stuff. ‘New Day’ is not a pure heavy rock album, it is more a mix between Creedence Clearwater Revival, semi-acoustic material and groovy rock. It shows Corabi from a different perspective, a more personal touch, I guess. Not the style we know of John although his rough voice gives him a certain familiarity. Don’t think that ‘New Day’ is a soft album, that is certainly not the case. It is just more laid back and more sophisticated in comparison with his other musical adventures, but is certainly has enough toughness and energetic material to qualify as a rock adventure.
JOHN CORABI – THE CONCLUSION
With songs such as ,,New Day’’, ,,That Memory’’ and several others, there are enough tracks there that will interest fans of John Corabi or The Dead Daisies. But the man shows also some other musical sides as on ,,Good To Be Back Here Again’’, where piano and acoustic guitars accompany John in a thoughtful song where he shows a lot of emotion in his voice. ‘New Day’ needs listeners with an open mind, people that appreciate the fact that John shows a more vulnerable side of himself as singer and musician.
This album is one you play on a rainy evening, an evening where you relax and hear a rocker being different, with more feeling and very accessible. I don’t mind ‘New Day’ at all. Corabi and his friends have done a stellar job and as you take the album for what it is, you will have a good time with it.
