Review | Glenn Hughes – Chosen

Frontiers Music srl

Solo-albums by Glenn Hughes are hard to come by these days. His last one ‘Resonate’ was released in 2016 and the one before that (‘First Underground Nuclear Kitchen’) in 2008. So, three albums in seventeen years are not that much. But as we all know Glenn has not been sitting still the last decades. Think about albums with Black Country Communion, The Dead Daisies plus California Breed. Add to that countless guest appearances on other albums and constant touring. ‘The Voice Of Rock’ certainly has not been resting on his laurels. And as I write this review of his new album ‘Chosen’ he is already playing in Europe promoting this record (until the end of November) before embarking to South America. At the age of 74 Glenn is as active as he has ever been.

INTERVIEWS

Still, I wonder what the future might hold for one of the best rock singers that this world has ever seen and heard. In recent interviews he stated that Gary Moore was his favourite guitarist of all time, shortly followed by Joe Bonamassa. But Glenn also stated that ‘Chosen’ most likely will be his last rock album! He has stated such a thing several years ago as well, but found out that his fans rather hear him rocking instead of making a soul/funk record. Glenn is a big fan of the soul and funk genre, and his heart goes out to that kind of music, but will his fans accept a change like that? I really wonder. Personally, I would like to see Glenn team up again with Tony Iommi and raise some more hell with the Black Sabbath icon.

CHOSEN

Let us not look too far into Glenn’s musical future and check out ‘Chosen’. Working again with the excellent guitarist/producer Soren Andersen, drummer Ash Sheehan and keyboardist Bob Fridzema (his role is mainly adding some colour) this record offers us some vintage Glenn Hughes, hard and heavy rock with quite personal lyrics from the singer/bass player. Hughes confirms yet again why he is ‘The Voice Of Rock’. His singing is absolutely immaculate and super energetic while his groovy bass parts are dominantly present on songs such as ,,My Alibi’’.

Guitarist Soren Andersen has proven throughout the years that he is a perfect sidekick for mister Hughes. His riffs and solos are not to be ignored throughout the whole album that also holds a spot reserved for a super ballad entitled ,,Come And Go’’. The intro of that emotional track reminds me a bit of John Sykes. I can not for the full hundred percent explain it, it is more a feeling that came up while hearing this gorgeous song.

GLENN HUGHES – THE CONCLUSION

The personal lyrics that Glenn has written for ‘Chosen’ every now and then remind me of several lyrics he wrote years ago for his album ‘Addiction’. The lyrics offer an insight of Glenn’s inner self, how he sees things in life and he is sharing those thoughts and feelings in (most of the time) robust rock songs that bring out the best in him. The fact that Glenn has not recorded that many solo-albums in the last two decades can be seen as a plus (!). What I mean is that he has taken the time to think about his musical and lyrical direction, amidst his other projects in the last years.

The result is if you are a fan of this man very, very satisfying indeed. He has poured his heart out in these ten songs, that are full of flavor, mood swings and most of all class! If this is his last rock record, hey, he is going out with a bang. But something tells me we have not heard the last rock album of this music icon. His next one might be different perhaps, but when push comes to shove, the Voice Of Rock will be rocking again! His fans will just demand it. Mark my words….
